Control room for high performance: transparency and efficiency at the PUMA logistics center

Maximum controllability and intuitive visualisation! With a tailor-made control room, TGW Logistics has created a new dimension of logistics monitoring on behalf of sports company PUMA SE. The system installed by JST – Jungmann Systemtechnik® – in Geiselwind, Bavaria, shows how complex material flows, alarms and processes can be efficiently consolidated in a single control room. The implemented control center manages a state-of-the-art logistics operation that ensures the smooth flow of goods for millions of customers every day.

Geiselwind is home to a state-of-the-art multi-channel logistics centre that ships shoes, textiles and accessories throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the Benelux countries and other European countries. It supplies both B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) customers.

Professional monitoring – simply indispensable

Every day, tens of thousands of items pass through shuttles, conveyor systems and picking stations across more than 64,000 square metres of warehouse space. The facility’s operation is managed by BLG LOGISTICS, while the highly automated systems are monitored and controlled by TGW Logistics. Ulrich Bühler (Manager Resident Engineering, TGW Logistics) explains the requirements the new control room had to meet: “Our operators monitor the material flow and intervene directly in the system control when necessary. There are so many systems and moving parts here that professional monitoring is simply indispensable. This can’t be handled with a makeshift setup of just a few screens.”

A control room that makes processes manageable

The goal was to find a provider that could deliver a comprehensive solution for a logistics control center where all processes come together – from goods receipt to order processing. After initial contact, the team visited the Jungmann Systemtechnik control room simulator. “There was a live demonstration of how the JST system works – that was a real eye-opener for everyone involved,” says Bühler. It quickly became clear that the control room professionals from northern Germany were the perfect match for the requirements in Geiselwind.

Two levels and twenty kilometres at a glance

“We work on two levels with 20 kilometres of conveyor technology. Our task is to maintain an overview at all times and guide our colleagues on the shop floor,” explains Ulrich Bühler. His deputy, Andreas Mohl, adds: “If a carton gets jammed or a consumable runs out, we have to prioritise and react quickly. A large part of the system is designed redundantly so that we can switch to alternative routes if necessary.”

Intuitive operation that inspires the team

To maintain continuous and seamless control over all these processes, the logistics specialists opted for a complete JST solution. When selecting the system, the control room staff placed great emphasis on easy and clear operation. “The team wanted a system that is fast and intuitive,” reports Andreas Mohl. “We also wanted a modular solution that could be tailored exactly to our needs.”

Tailor-made technology for the highest demands

Today, a modern DisplayWall visualises the entire facility using an innovative KVM solution (KVM = Keyboard, Video, Mouse). The MultiConsoling® system, in combination with the myGUI® user interface, allows flexible connection of all sources and systems at any desired workstation or on the video wall displays. “With the myGUI®, we can switch between different screens easily without having to reconnect or select new computers. That saves a great deal of time and avoids errors,” says Ulrich Bühler.

„Many customers first become curious about JST while researching online. It is only in the second step, when visiting our control room simulator, that they often realise, ‘JST offers exactly the technology we have been looking for. We experienced the same here. Real-time monitoring of system components, coordination and prioritisation of faults – these were key requirements fulfilled by the new logistics control room. Our KVM solution MultiConsoling®, with its smart performance options, proved to be the perfect solution in combination with large-screen technology and ergonomic workstations.”

Component combination brings decisive benefits

In addition to pragmatic technical solutions, ergonomics was also a top priority. “We wanted workstations that make it easier for operators to handle disruptions, analyse faults, and carry out repairs,” summarises Andreas Mohl. “In JST’s concept, we were convinced by the combination of visualisation, alarm management and ergonomic working conditions – including the Stratos desks.” The technology itself was moved to an adjoining room to avoid heat and noise in the control center.

Investment in quality and external impact

Beyond technical functionality, TGW Logistics also values external presentation. “When we looked into the different providers, it quickly became clear that JST offers the most professional appearance and a system that impresses during client visits as well,” says Bühler. His conclusion: “The solution runs very reliably and the team is enthusiastic. The simple operation and clear visualisation make the work significantly easier.”
