Large-screen technology is at the heart of modern control centers – and for us, it is much more than just a wall of monitors! For almost 30 years, we have been developing visualisation concepts that make complex processes transparent and provide all parties involved with information in real time. Whether precisely coordinated LCD walls, scalable LED solutions or individually combined systems: finding the right platform for every task is one of our priorities when planning control rooms. We make information visible where it is needed. Maximum 24/7 operational reliability and uncompromising image quality are just as important as ergonomic viewing conditions and flexible scalability in the event of growing requirements.
DisplayWall technology from JST ensures reliable signal management on the video wall. Alarms, camera images and process data are clearly displayed. With features such as automated event visualisation, proactive alarm escalation and flexible source control, we create the conditions for clear responsibilities and short response times. This allows operators to act confidently even under time pressure!
Event visualisation in the control room: intelligent video wall becomes a proactive colleague
One glance at the video wall – and you immediately know what needs to be done. Those who maintain an overview in control rooms and monitoring stations also have critical processes under control. Modern large-screen technology is becoming the visual backbone of control rooms. It ensures that operators can reliably access all information, even under time pressure. Investing in high-resolution displays, sophisticated control concepts and proactive alarm visualisation today gives your team a decisive advantage – both in daily routine and in emergencies.
Control room expert Dominik Zepp knows exactly: time-critical decisions have to be made continuously in the control center. Large-screen technology not only gives the operator an improved overview and thus added safety. In addition, positive effects can be recorded on the credit side thanks to ‘TeamView’. The entire control room team receives identical information, status and alarm messages at the same time.
Modern video wall technology offers decisive benefits – we talk to a specialist in large-screen visualisation: Dominik Zepp from JST – Jungmann Systemtechnik® explains which factors should be considered when choosing the right system and which benefits can already be achieved today by combining it with smart control and software solutions.
Why do control rooms use video walls with large-format displays in addition to the monitors at the operator workstation?
Dominik Zepp: Large-screen technology is more than just a desirable nice-to-have in the control room. It has a very central role to play: safety-related information is continuously visible to the entire team in real time. Camera images, process data or alarm messages can be displayed in high resolution on a video wall. This not only provides the desired overview, but also transparency and reliability – especially when several operators are working in parallel.
What advantages do modern video walls offer? Are they also suitable for continuous operation?
Dominik Zepp: The screens we recommend to our customers for their control rooms are based on LCD and LED technologies that have been specially developed for the business sector and differ significantly from conventional monitors. The displays must be extremely durable. Our systems are designed for 24/7 use and offer stable brightness, consistent colour fidelity and a particularly long service life. They are also designed to minimise maintenance cycles and reduce downtime to a minimum. These advantages are indispensable for safety-critical applications.
Is it possible to seamlessly integrate large-screen technology into existing IT structures at a later date?
Dominik Zepp: JST systems are modular in design and can be combined flexibly. Thanks to our KVM solutions JST MultiStreaming® and MultiConsoling® in combination with the myGUI® operating platform, content can be controlled, moved and prioritised as required, regardless of the manufacturer. This means that whether it’s a video stream, process visualisation or alarm display, everything can be switched on exactly where it’s needed.
DOMINIK ZEPP:
“We are just at the beginning: large-screen technology will merge even more closely with automation, AI and interaction in the coming years. What provides an overview today will think proactively tomorrow – and thus fundamentally change the way we work in the control room.”
Can the alarm visualisation on the video wall be automated?
Dominik Zepp: Yes, absolutely. With our PixelDetection® alarm software, you can set it up so that defined events are automatically displayed on the video wall. The monitoring tool even checks the screen content that is not currently visible in the background. Let’s assume that a predefined parameter is exceeded or not reached within a process. The operator then receives a warning message and the affected area is immediately visualised. This allows the control room team to take action before a deviation potentially escalates into a serious alarm. This saves valuable seconds and ensures that the operator team does not miss any critical information.
What sizes and video wall variants are available for different control room concepts?
Dominik Zepp: We always plan large screens on an individual basis. The spectrum ranges from compact solutions with individual modules to room-filling installations consisting of dozens of displays. The size depends on many factors: room dimensions, viewing distances, desired information density and, last but not least, the operating concept. Together with the customer, we develop a setup that fits perfectly into the overall architecture.
What role does ergonomics play in large-screen visualisation?
Dominik Zepp: Ergonomics is often underestimated. But the placement of displays, viewing angles and brightness adjustment are crucial in determining whether information can be absorbed quickly enough. That’s what it’s all about: can the operator actually process the data provided in the shortest possible time? Do they react at the desired speed? To answer these questions with a ‘yes’, the equipment must be perfectly coordinated. We attach great importance to ensuring that sight lines are calculated correctly, contrast values are appropriate and lighting conditions are taken into account. Ultimately, these factors increase the ability to concentrate and reduce stress during long shifts.
LCD or LED – which large-screen technology is suitable for my control room?
Dominik Zepp: That depends greatly on the specific conditions. LCD video walls offer excellent value for money, high-quality image display and a slim design. They are ideal when high resolution, clear contrasts and a compact design are required. LED technology, on the other hand, offers particular advantages for large viewing distances and extremely variable formats. Thanks to their modular design, LED walls can be scaled to almost any size and also score points for their excellent brightness and high colour stability over many years. We always advise our customers individually on which technology is best suited to the size of the room, the intended use and the budget. Even hybrid concepts are possible: for example, LED walls as the central display and LCDs for detailed information.
Where is large-screen technology heading in the next few years?
Dominik Zepp: We are observing two major trends: On the one hand, resolutions and colour brilliance continue to increase. On the other hand, the degree of automation is growing. Keyword: content management. In the future, systems will be increasingly able to intelligently prioritise content and display it automatically depending on events. In addition, the integration of touch interactions or augmented reality elements will open up new application scenarios.
