You need to consider this when choosing control room furniture!

Employees and technology should work together in perfect harmony! Control room furniture is much more than just a simple workstation. It must meet the highest standards in terms of ergonomics, technology integration, modularity, stability, 24/7 suitability and safety standards. We will outline the key criteria you need to consider when planning or modernising a control room.

Ergonomics comes first

Height-adjustable tables can be adapted to suit different users working in shifts. Armrests, cable management and glare-free materials should also be taken into account.

Modular & functional

The control room is being relocated and the exclusive furniture no longer fits? This can be avoided! It is best to consider retrofitability and flexible extensions right from the start!

Technology integration

Is there sufficient space for the KVM technology components? Is the hardware sufficiently ventilated and easily accessible? Modern control room furniture meets these criteria.

Stability & durability

Permanent 24/7 operation places high demands on control center equipment. Robust design and high-quality materials are therefore essential. Rely on DIN-certified quality!

Operating logic & overview

Ideally, all controls should be within the operator’s direct range of sight. This also includes visual alarm tools such as light strips. Even better: equipment and furniture form a single unit.

Visual effect

Whether for your own team or for your image: do not underestimate the visual impact of your new control room! Professional design has an effect on employees and visitors.

Do you want to avoid ‘stumbling blocks’ when planning your control room?

Ergonomics, technology, efficiency: furniture for control rooms can do more than just look good

In hardly any other working environment are technological and ergonomic requirements so directly linked to responsibility as in the control room. Decisions must be made in seconds and complex processes coordinated without error. The right equipment plays a decisive role in efficiency, concentration and health. In our interview, Volker Weimer, ergonomics expert at JST – Jungmann Systemtechnik®, outlines the most important arguments for choosing the right control room furniture. He knows which innovations make everyday work easier and how smart furniture concepts can make control rooms fit for the future.

Volker Weimer JST

Ergonomics expert Volker Weimer knows the key factors for efficient control rooms.

What is the difference between control room furniture and conventional office furniture, and why do control rooms need special equipment?

Volker Weimer: Control room furniture is highly specialized equipment designed for long-term use in monitoring centers, command stations and safety-critical environments. Unlike conventional office furniture, it meets higher requirements in terms of ergonomics, stability and technical integration. In 24/7 operation – for example in energy stations, data centers or traffic control rooms– it makes a decisive contribution to ease of use, safety and efficient work organisation.

Ergonomics is a key buzzword in control center technology. What advantages does ergonomic furniture offer operators?

Volker Weimer: Ergonomic control room furniture directly supports the health of employees. Height-adjustable desks, individually optimises monitor arms and chairs with special lumbar support prevent poor posture, promote blood circulation and enable longer periods of concentration without fatigue. This means fewer sick days, higher performance and faster response times in emergencies.

Which components are part of a complete control center setup?

Volker Weimer: The star of every control room is the operator console. But in addition to the actual control desks, the perfect setup also includes ergonomic 24/7 operator chairs, acoustic absorbers and innovative lighting solutions. Functional furniture such as custom-made technical cabinets and sideboards must also be considered during the planning stage. A conference table equipped with important connections and control elements may also be relevant. All modules should be optimally tailored to the respective room architecture, process-relevant procedures and technical requirements. The goal is always to create a working environment that provides orientation, simplifies communication and enables maximum concentration.

VOLKER WEIMER:

‘Control room furniture is more than just furniture – it is a key component for safety, concentration and efficiency in critical situations. With its well-thought-out ergonomics, technology and structure, it enables maximum performance at all times. Anyone who skimps here risks more than just comfort.’

If the control room console is the central unit in the control center, what technical features should a modern operator console have?

Volker Weimer: Innovative control room consoles such as our Stratos X11® feature sophisticated cable management, storage space for IT components and connection options for KVM systems. Touch displays, HMI interfaces, QI charging zones and special control elements can also be integrated directly into the desk. This close integration with the technology ensures a tidy workplace, reduces sources of error and increases efficiency in daily operation.

What is meant by process-optimised control room furniture?

Volker Weimer: Process-optimised control room furniture means that the equipment is precisely tailored to operational processes. This can be achieved, for example, through the logical arrangement of monitors, flexible teamwork zones, visual guidance systems or separate areas for communication and quiet work. The result is a structure that supports workflow and reduces stress. For us, ‘ergonomic’ does not simply mean installing a height-adjustable desk. It is about creating the technical basis for reducing the number of monitors for the operator. We want to counteract sensory overload and limit the displays to the essentials. That is true ergonomics. Our KVM systems make this step possible. The operator switches on the application they currently need.

The control center sector is a real growth area that is constantly changing. How flexible is control room furniture when new technologies need to be integrated?

Volker Weimer: Our furniture systems are modular and designed to be future-proof. New devices or applications can be added at any time. No costly modifications are necessary. Here, we again benefit from the performance of JST MultiStreaming® and MultiConsoling®. The technology in the background is expanded, while the operator’s workplace remains unchanged. This is particularly important in dynamic industries where IT landscapes and process requirements are constantly evolving. This ensures that control rooms remain scalable and cost-efficient in the long term.

What influence does professional control room furniture have on safety and response times?

Volker Weimer: When the furniture concept is supported by a central control system, fewer screens need to be monitored at the workstation. This improves the overview and orientation in the control room. Naturally, this results in shorter response times and helps operators to act more quickly in critical situations. At the same time, the risk of operating errors is reduced, which significantly increases operational safety.

Many control rooms operate around the clock. So it probably makes sense to focus on special furniture for 24/7 shift work and continuous use, right?

Volker Weimer: Absolutely! Robust and ergonomic furniture is indispensable, especially in shift work. For example, a chair is not used for 40 hours per week, but more than four times as long, namely 168 hours. Our 24/7-compatible control center desks and operator chairs are designed, tested and certified for this continuous use. This ensures comfort, reliability and long-term operational safety.

Finally, can you give us a glimpse into the future? How will control room furniture develop over the next few years?

Volker Weimer: We are seeing a trend towards even more networked, modular furniture systems in combination with smart technical components. This combines ergonomics, digitalisation and sustainability. Control stations are even more efficient and user-friendly. This is ensured by intelligent control concepts, adaptive lighting, individual climate settings and AI-supported aids. The primary goal is to create workplaces that can be flexibly adapted to processes, people and new technologies. People are consistently at the focus of all upgrades in these developments.
