BACK TO OVERVIEW

Observe, understand, predict

With COSYNA (Coastal Observing System for Northern and Arctic Seas), a comprehensive observation system for recording, forecasting and scientific analysis of the current state and development of the coastal sea in the area of the German Bight in the North Sea is being developed. COSYNA is coordinated by the Helmholtz Center Geesthacht near Hamburg. The biggest problems facing coasts and seas today include overfishing, eutrophication and the input of harmful substances – not to mention the effects of climate change. However, the scientific tools to precisely assess and predict parameters such as currents, water temperature or algae concentration are still missing.

With the extensive data and model calculations in COSYNA, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht hopes to gain a better understanding of the development of the system of coastal seas as a result of physical, ecological and biogeochemical processes in detail and thus enable their predictability.

For a better overview and quick comparison of the many and varied measurement data, it was necessary to select a flexible and space-saving display that could be viewed by several people simultaneously. The Helmholtz Center Geesthacht has also made its versatile demands on JST. It soon became clear that beside a large display wall, an easy to handle control is also indispensable. In order to push various computers to the right display on the large display wall by mouse click, the product MultiConsoling® from JST was chosen. In addition, all remotely installed computers can now be operated in real time with only one workstation console.

A further requirement was fulfilled by allowing the connection of any computer, regardless of its operating system. Thus, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht keeps itself open for future technological changes.

We thank all employees of the “Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht” involved in the project for their excellent cooperation.
